A bonsai is judged standing on a bench in front of people who know exactly what they are looking at, which is a harder test than any photograph. These are the ones ours have sat.
Our own winter viewing, 2026
Once a year we open the polytunnels in the worst week of January, when there is not a leaf on anything deciduous and there is nowhere for a bad branch to hide. It is the only honest way to look at a broom.

Bonsai Europa, Manchester, 2025
We took three collected trees and a van with a broken heater to Manchester in September. Scars was not for sale, which several people found difficult, and two of them asked twice.

The back bench, March 2025
Not an exhibition so much as a record. Six weeks in spring when everything comes out of its pot, gets looked at properly, and goes back in — and the only time of year you can see what a tree is actually standing on.
