Stonecrop

Juniperus communis · Common juniper

Off a Cairngorm slope in 1991, under licence

A literati juniper with more deadwood than live vein, on a trunk that took the mountain three hundred years to make and a collector one morning to lift. The single live line runs the length of it and is the only thing keeping it alive.

No tree leaves here on the strength of a photograph. Come and walk round it first — we will hold anything for a fortnight while you decide. Delivery is by hand, in our own van, anywhere in the British Isles.

Every tree goes with a year of aftercare: repotting when it wants it, winter cover, and a standing invitation to bring it back if it sulks. Most people use it. Nobody has ever been charged for it.

Keeping it
It has survived worse than your garden. Full exposure, sharp drainage, and never repot it in the same decade you style it.

Where it came from

Collected in 1991 with the estate’s permission, from ground being cleared for a track. It spent nine years in a box recovering and was not touched with wire until 2004. We have the original licence, the collector’s notes, and a photograph of the hole it came out of.
