The Gower Hawthorn

Crataegus monogyna · Common hawthorn

Shaped by forty years of one prevailing wind

Windswept, and not by anybody here — every branch runs the same way because the Atlantic put them there. Flowers white, fruits red, and has the coarsest, most convincing bark of anything in the nursery.

No tree leaves here on the strength of a photograph. Come and walk round it first — we will hold anything for a fortnight while you decide. Delivery is by hand, in our own van, anywhere in the British Isles.

Every tree goes with a year of aftercare: repotting when it wants it, winter cover, and a standing invitation to bring it back if it sulks. Most people use it. Nobody has ever been charged for it.

Keeping it
Hawthorn sulks after repotting and then forgives you entirely. Prune after flowering, and accept that it will put out one insane vertical shoot a year.

Where it came from

Lifted from a field boundary on the Gower in 2003 when the hedge was grubbed out for a fence line. The farmer wanted forty pounds and a hand with the digger. Twenty-two years of recovery and refinement since, almost all of it spent not interfering.
