Hollow Way

Acer palmatum · Japanese maple, Deshojo

Root over ironstone, twenty years clenched

A Deshojo maple whose roots have spent two decades gripping a piece of Sussex ironstone and are now indistinguishable from it. Spring growth is a red you will not quite believe until you see it.

No tree leaves here on the strength of a photograph. Come and walk round it first — we will hold anything for a fortnight while you decide. Delivery is by hand, in our own van, anywhere in the British Isles.

Every tree goes with a year of aftercare: repotting when it wants it, winter cover, and a standing invitation to bring it back if it sulks. Most people use it. Nobody has ever been charged for it.

Where it came from

Started in 2005 in a length of drainpipe packed with grit, as they all are, and unwrapped a fingerbreadth at a time from 2012 onward. The stone came out of the nursery’s own bank.
