The Long Field

Larix decidua · European larch

Sold in November 2025

Nine larch on a shallow tray, spaced wide to imply a field edge rather than a wood. A deciduous conifer does something no other group planting can: it goes gold, drops everything, and shows you the spacing.

No tree leaves here on the strength of a photograph. Come and walk round it first — we will hold anything for a fortnight while you decide. Delivery is by hand, in our own van, anywhere in the British Isles.

Every tree goes with a year of aftercare: repotting when it wants it, winter cover, and a standing invitation to bring it back if it sulks. Most people use it. Nobody has ever been charged for it.

This one has gone. It stays in the catalogue because the record is part of the nursery.

Larch want cold. A winter indoors kills them slowly enough that people do not connect the two.

Where it came from

Grown on from whips bought as forestry stock in 2011 at forty pence each. Sold to a garden in Northumberland with the space to stand it where it can be seen from a distance, which this planting has always needed.
