Zelkova serrata · Japanese grey-bark elm

Seventeen trunks on one slate, planted 1998

A forest built on an odd number, as they must be, with the heaviest trunk forward and left and everything else deferring to it. Twenty-seven years in, the roots have fused and it now behaves as one organism.

No tree leaves here on the strength of a photograph. Come and walk round it first — we will hold anything for a fortnight while you decide. Delivery is by hand, in our own van, anywhere in the British Isles.

Every tree goes with a year of aftercare: repotting when it wants it, winter cover, and a standing invitation to bring it back if it sulks. Most people use it. Nobody has ever been charged for it.

Where it came from

Planted in 1998 from a batch of seedlings all grown from the same parent, which is why the group reads as one wood rather than a collection of individuals. Two trunks have been removed since — in 2007 and 2019 — both because they had become too interesting and were pulling the eye.
