Kanzan

Pinus parviflora · Japanese white pine

Imported 1968, grafted long before that

Heavy, low and deliberate, on a graft union so old it has stopped being visible. The pads have been kept open on purpose: this is a tree meant to be looked through rather than at.

No tree leaves here on the strength of a photograph. Come and walk round it first — we will hold anything for a fortnight while you decide. Delivery is by hand, in our own van, anywhere in the British Isles.

Every tree goes with a year of aftercare: repotting when it wants it, winter cover, and a standing invitation to bring it back if it sulks. Most people use it. Nobody has ever been charged for it.

Held for a customer. Ring the nursery if you would like to be told should it come back.

Needle-pull in autumn, candle-cut in June, and leave it alone otherwise. It is at the stage where most of the work is deciding what not to do.

Where it came from

One of a consignment of eleven pines landed at Southampton in 1968 for a collector in Hampshire. Four are known to survive. This one passed through two hands before ours and has been photographed at every stage since 1974, which is unusual and worth as much as the tree.
