The Cranbrook Elm

Zelkova serrata · Japanese grey-bark elm

A textbook broom, built the slow way

Chopped once, in 1981, and never again. Everything above that cut is forty-four years of pinching, which is why the shoulders are smooth and the crown divides as evenly as it does.

No tree leaves here on the strength of a photograph. Come and walk round it first — we will hold anything for a fortnight while you decide. Delivery is by hand, in our own van, anywhere in the British Isles.

Every tree goes with a year of aftercare: repotting when it wants it, winter cover, and a standing invitation to bring it back if it sulks. Most people use it. Nobody has ever been charged for it.

Keeping it
Wind is the enemy of a broom — twigs this fine snap. Somewhere bright and sheltered, and cut back hard every February.

Where it came from

Field-grown in Cranbrook by a hop farmer who took up bonsai after retiring and did everything the long way round because nobody had told him there was a short one. He was right. We bought it from his daughter in 2016.
